Silverhand Estate is celebrating a new chapter for nature, heritage, and responsible land stewardship.
Silverhand Estate has announced it is now part of the newly designated North Kent Woods and Downs National Nature Reserve, the first National Nature Reserve in the UK to include a certified organic and fully carbon-negative vineyard.
As the largest single organic vineyard in the country, Silverhand Estate spans over 900 acres in the heart of Kent’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, producing award-winning still and sparkling wines while placing sustainability, biodiversity, and regenerative farming at the centre of everything they do.
The reserve, launched as part of the government’s King’s Series of National Nature Reserves, covers over almost 2,000 acres of chalk grassland, ancient woodland, and wildflower meadows, and sits within five miles of 400,000 people. Designed to protect biodiversity while improving access to nature, it is home to more than 1,700 ancient and veteran trees, along with nationally important species such as the Hazel dormouse, skylark, and the Maidstone mining bee.
This declaration recognises the ecological significance of our landscape, including ancient woodlands, wildflower meadows, and chalk grasslands, and brings together partners who share a commitment to protecting and restoring the natural world.
“We are delighted to be a part of and working alongside the NNR,” said Gary Smith, CEO of Silverhand Estate. “Sustainability, regenerative farming and protection of the landscape is at the heart of everything we do on our Estate. The work our conservation team does has had an enormously positive impact on the local landscape and we are excited to be able to share this with the community going forward.”
“This announcement reflects our belief that economic vitality and environmental responsibility are not only compatible — they are inseparable. By investing in the health of the land, we protect its future, its story, and the craft it enables.”
