The Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships

Rosé named national champion

A record-breaking number of awards was presented at this year’s Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC) awards dinner which took place on Monday 4 November 2019 at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London.

Sussex producer Bolney Wine Estate stole the night for England this year, being presented the trophy for Best English Sparkling Wine for its 2016 Cuvée Rosé in Magnum format, as well as Best in Class English Rosé Vintage and Best in Class English Magnum. This is the second year running that a sparkling rosé has been selected as the competition’s national champion.

Other English sparkling wines from Cottonworth, Digby Fine English, Gusbourne, Lyme Bay and Simpsons Wine Estate, were also presented with Best in Class awards on the night.

“Every year the standard of sparkling wines entered just keep on getting better and better,” said CSWWC founder and head judge Tom Stevenson. “The bar was set high from day one and the trophy count certainly reflects this. However, it is not only our mission to promote world class wines, but also to discover and reward new and exciting wines from established and emerging regions across the world. Another is keeping track of all the established greats, seeing if they come through the totally blind process with golds, best in class and then on to trophies, and they certainly proved it this year.”
