Joining the war against sea pollution, Cornish vineyard, Polgoon, has announced it will be boycotting single-use plastics from 2018.
Following a campaign launched by the marine conservation group Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), the vineyard’s home town, Penzance, was the first town in the UK to have been given plastic-free coastlines approved status.
To win this status, Penzance had to complete five objectives set out by SAS, such as setting up a steering group and organising beach cleans across the west coast of Cornwall, of which the Polgoon team have participated in.
Alongside replacing all plastic bags in the vineyard shop with canvas bags for life, Polgoon has pledged to use biodegradable tasting cups at all shows and sampling events; will no longer allow plastic bottles to be sold; and will be actively encouraging its shop suppliers to find alternative packaging solutions.
“This is a big challenge for us, but one which we feel truly passionate about as we have such a strong connection to the sea, our environment and the elements,” said Kim Coulson at Polgoon. “This is a lifelong commitment by Polgoon to become plastic free and we will continue to look at all areas of our business in an attempt to reduce any unnecessary use of plastic.”
